KONRAD MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2011
VITICULTURE Hand and machine harvested from the
family owned Waihopai
Valley and Wairau Valley sites. Soil in the vineyard is of stony silt with loam topsoil and free
draining. Canopy Management is vertical shoot positioning with shoot and crop thinning.
WINEMAKING Stainless steel tank fermented at controlled temperatures
between 10 -13 Deg. C, with 3% French oak barrel fermentation to add complexity and palate weight.
This wine is left on lees for up to 3 months.
TASTING NOTES A brilliant, pale straw green colour. This is a classically restrained, style
of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. We have deliberately avoided excessive greenness preferring to
show a range of Sauvignon aromas resulting from staggered harvesting targeting specific ripeness
levels in the fruit. The nose is ultra clean, with precise lime and grapefruit citrus characters
lifting the ripe gooseberry and tropical fruit notes typical of the region and variety. Further
complexity is enhanced by subtle flinty notes from a small portion of barrel fermentation. The
palate shows similar precision showing a linear range of flavours starting with citrus notes,
building through classic gooseberry and passionfruit, to more exotic tropical elements. The
structure, long, clean and persistent, with particular attention to the acid sugar balance
allowing free expression of both regional and varietal characters to show. The small portion of
barrel fermentation adds texture to the palate with subtle smoky notes and brings the wine to a
dry finish.
Cellaring potential 2 to 3 years, will develop well over the next 2 years.
A wine to enjoy now with seafood, poultry, pasta and Asian dishes or just by itself.
